The Airbus A340 is a four engine long haul aircraft developed by airbus industries. First flight was on 25th October 1991 as a A340-300 version.

It is the first four engine aircraft manucatured by airbus and the first four engine fly by wire aircraft ever. The A340 was developed together with the A330 so both aircraft have many same parts and systems. The final assembly line is in Toulouse together with the A330. 385 aircraft have been ordered, 363 already delivered - 358 are still operating.

Sales on the A340 have become very difficult since Boeing announced its B777.
